The present invention provides compositions for making biodegradable biocomposites, comprising poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBV) or a mixture of PHBV and polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT); a hemp residue; and optionally PBAT grafted with one or more compatibilizers selected from maleic anhydride, glycidyl methacrylate, pyromellitic anhydride, acrylic acid, polyacrylic acid, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, poly(glycidyl methacrylate, copolymer(s) of glycidyl methacrylate and copolymers of acrylic acid, and/or one or more compatibilizers from maleic anhydride, glycidyl methacrylate, pyromellitic anhydride, acrylic acid, polyacrylic acid, methylene diphenyl diisocyanate, poly(glycidyl methacrylate, copolymer(s) of glycidyl methacrylate and copolymers of acrylic acid.
